Silhouette (1999)
solo guitar, flute, clarinet, percussion, piano, violin and cello
Notes on the Composition:
Sometimes and idea needs to be revisited. After writing a work for solo guitar in 1995, I decided to include that piece within a larger work for chamber ensemble and guitar. Silhouette quietly unfolds from a dark place, gradually letting the sound of the guitar come into focus. The vibraphone energizes the work with long strands of notes colored by the ensemble. The guitar continues a lyrical passage above the intensity of the ensemble before returning to a darker perspective to close the work.
Silhouette was commissioned by the Society of Composers, Incorporated for the 1999 SCI National Convention in New York City. The commission came as a result of the 1998 SCI Composition Content where Howard Yermish's work Five Images was the Regional and National winner.
